🖌️ Plein Air Painting Intensive with Artist Sarah Randall
We welcomed participants to a plein air painting weekend tutored by renowned Australian artist Sarah Randall. Designed for everyone from beginners to seasoned artists, the program offered hands-on professional development in contemporary landscape techniques. Over the course of the weekend, attendees explored composition, colour theory, and expressive mark-making while painting directly within the regional landscape. With only 8 participants, the workshop ensured personalised guidance and space for deep artistic growth.
In a professionally curated weekend program, participants engaged in a plein air painting workshop led by esteemed Australian artist Sarah Randall. Tailored for both emerging and established practitioners, the workshop provided a structured opportunity for artistic and technical skill enhancement within the genre of landscape painting.
📚 Through direct engagement with the regional environment, participants explored critical methodologies in composition, chromatic theory, and observational rendering. The instructional framework emphasised reflective practice, material experimentation, and iterative development of individual technique.
🔢 Participation was limited to eight, ensuring an optimal tutor-to-student ratio and facilitating focused, one-on-one mentorship aligned with each participant’s developmental objectives.
About Sarah Randall
Sarah Randall is an artist based in Orange, NSW. Her work is informed by a Bachelor of Creative Arts, Wollongong in 2013, Masters Fine Art (coursework), RMIT in 2015 and Grad Cert of Art History, from the University of Melbourne. She has completed residencies in Tasmania, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea and Ireland where her paintings have been collected publicly and privately. In 2018, she exhibited as an Australian artist in the Jeonnam International Sumuk Biennale (Mokpo, South Korea), following a residency in the Bank of Fishermen Building. In 2019, she was a finalist in the Calleen Art Prize, STILL in 2021, as wells the Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award. In 2025 Sarah has an artist in residence with the State Library of NSW and has been awarded a residency in 2026 at Bundanon through the William Fletcher Foundation.
PROGRAM:
Sat 3rd - Day 1 - Black and White (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM)
Morning Session (9:00 AM - 12:00PM)
Introduction to Plein Air Painting: Sarah Randall provides an overview of her practice, en plein air painting techniques, and what to look for in the landscape to create a sense of place.
Materials and setup: Participants learn about the essential tools, paints, and easels required for en plein air painting. Sarah demonstrates how to create an outdoor studio and make the most of climatic conditions.
Sketching before painting techniques and demonstrations
Lunch Break (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM)
Afternoon Session (1:00 PM - 4:00 PM)
Location Scouting: Sarah guides participants on a short nature walk to select an outdoor location within the CORRIDOR project property.
Practical Painting Session: Participants begin their first en plein air painting under Sarah's guidance, focusing on painterly techniques to capture colours, textures, and lighting of the Australian landscape.
Sun 4th - Day 2: Refining Techniques and Personal Expression Morning Session (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM)
Group Critique and Feedback: Participants discuss their process and work from Day 1 with constructive feedback and insights from both Sarah and fellow artists
Skyscapes: Sarah progresses into more advanced plein air techniques, exploring ways to capture atmosphere, depth, and mood in outdoor settings.

Afternoon Session (1:00 PM - 4:00 PM)
Individual Guidance: Sarah provides one-on-one guidance, addressing specific challenges and helping participants refine their artistic styles.
Final review: The workshop concludes with a collective exhibition of participants' paintings.
Note: The CORRIDOR project provides a dynamic and inspiring location to develop skills, presented in a diverse natural terrain, with an abundant native vegetation, birds, animals, rivers, granite strewn mountains and big skies.
What’s in the package and what to bring?
Drawing materials and sketch paper and easels supplied; addtional papers, canvas/stretcher and paints to be supplied by artists attending. Includes: Hand made pocket sketchbook + primed and ready to paint: 9" x 5" birch board
Accommodation and Catering
